Costume

A very important factor in my project is the costume. The costume can me used to convey a characters personality and it can also be used to set the scene and give the viewer an idea of the kind of genre they are listening to.

Because this song is quite popular, I have chosen to dress my actors in chinos, a basic tee shirt and a cap. I made this decision because this style is also very popular at the moment as well as being stylish and fashionable. This will be what my character will be using for the majority of the shoot. However in the chorus I will want my character to change costume to add an extra dimension to the project and make it seem more interesting.

Storyboard

To help me plan my music video, I created a story board to make filming easier. On these images, you can see that I have planned it out scene by scene. Obviously i can not stick to this plan 100% but hopefully it will be pretty close. 

This Weekend

This weekend I was planning on shooting my music video. However both of my actors were working. This means that I am going to have to shoot my video this upcoming weekend. To make sure that it happened I am going to notify all of my actors early and make sure that they can attend the shoot.

I have all of the required video cameras and lighting equipment to make this possible.

Issues

I have come across a few minor issues as macromedia fireworks does not seem to be functioning properly on my laptop. This may delay my construction process by a couple of days, however I will overcome this by working on different parts of my project at this time so that I do not lose to much important construction hours.

Album Artwork Drafts

I have began working on and developing some album artwork for my CD. I have been inspired by some other covers, however I believe i have come up with an individual and creative design.

Lyrics

After i have made the song choice, I can start looking at the lyrics and this will help me create an image in my head of what the product will look like, and I can get an idea of the story board etc.

From reading the lyrics, I can see that the song is about a man who is telling a female to run away and get away from him as he will only cause trouble if she gets involved. This has helped me as now I have a motif and an incentive to work of when making my product.

Song Choice

After listening to Olly Murs- Heart Skips a beat, over and over, i have established that it is a summer song and the video is also very dependant on the weather. Therefore, before undertaking anymore planning, i am going to change my song choice to Bruno Mars- Runaway Baby. This song is a similar genre therefore i will be keeping the same actors and locations. The style of both Olly Murs and Bruno Mars a also very similar so it will not make too much of an impact on my project.

I have been assessing the area for good locations for my film shoot. For my establishing shot i will need a long road that is not busy. For this i have chosen a road in an estate nearby which rarely has cars coming through. I have also looked at Hanley Bus station as an option for part of my shoot.

In Manchester Salford Quays , there is a vast circle with some unusual modern sculptures, which believe would be suitable for my project.

I will be uploading pictures of all of the locations at a later date.

Casting main actor

     This will be my main actor, Harry Jones. I have chosen him because he has experience singing and performing and will therefore feel comfortable in front of a camera and in a video shoot environment.

    

     Harry's style is also very similar to the genre in which i wish to produce my music video. This will help as if he enjoys the music he will enjoy the filming process and will also be able to understand the things that I am asking for on the shoot.

     Harry is a lot younger than the artist I am asking him to imitate, however, depending on the lighting, clothing, props etc. I think that I will be able to make him look older.

Style

Olly Murs' Style is cross between indie and casual. However his music videos can be perceived as being almost Hip Hop like. The music has a reggae feel to is. Which may have influenced the way that the video has been modeled.

I am now going analyse a few different style outfits to decide what i believe my artist should wear in the video.

Colour Schemes

- Due to my chosen genre and song I will have to pick my colour scheme accordingly. A colour scheme is very important when designing items such as front covers etc. This is because you need a consistent house style throughout the artists work. If this is done properly, it will result in a professional style album cover and it will help the artist become recognisable on a shop floor.

back cover analysis

This is the "Bruno Mars" album called "Doo waps and hooligans".

This is a very unconventional cover because it does not follow the standard layout of a back cover. The song list is centrally aligned in the center of the page.

Also, there is no image. This is unusual for a back cover, therefore making it unconventional.

The colour scheme that they have used is yellow cream and black. This is very basic which matches the layout as that is also very basic and simplistic.

Back cover analysis

This is another conventional back cover, there is a large picture taking up the majority of the page, and the song list is along the left hand side.

Unlike the Lil Wayne cover, the song list is centrally aligned rather than being set to the left. I think that they have done this to break the conventions.

There are many other "Unconventional" features to this, such as the bar code positioned on the bottom left rather than the bottom right.

The artist in the picture is looking directly at the camera. This will automatically make a connection with the user. I think that this has been done because the songs are about things that "Adele" has been through, and by looking into the camera the artist can make the user empathise and emotionally connect with her.

I like the layout of this design, I also like the way that the song list is centrally aligned and i may consider using this in my design.

I dont like the way that the artist is looking at the camera, I think that this should be done on the front cover, and the back the artist should look away. I think that this would give the impression that you are looking "behind the scenes".

Existing Back of Album Cover Analysis

Here is the rear of Lil Wayne's album cover. This is a very typical layout as it has one image as the background, and the list of songs along the right of the page. The colour scheme is black and red. These to colours do not usually look effective together, however, this is the image they would like Lil Wayne to have.
There are no additional logos on this which is unconventional.

On the back of my album cover, I think I am going to take inspiration from the simplicity of the design and layout.

CD covers

From looking at a lot of front covers I have a greater understanding of what they need to contain etc. The front of a CD case is used to attract attention so it must be eye catching. It is also used to inform you of the name of the artist/band and the name of the album/single.

This means that on my cover I will need a strong eye catching image, a set colour scheme and a bold clear font.

Album Artwork Research

This album artwork is from Justin Bieber Never Say Never album. The main focus of the album is on the picture of Justin Bieber. This has been done because the artist is known for the way he looks and most teenage girls will recognise his face and instantly be drawn towards the album.

Justin Bieber is known for famously wearing purple in his concerts, therefore by adding a hint of purple into the artwork it will again make it recognisable. The black white and grey in the background helps to emphisise this.

A big part of the promotion of a song/album is the aesthetics of the artwork as this will be the fisrt thing you notice when it is on the shelves in a shop. This means that the artwork that I create must be eyecatching and it should reflect the style and genre of music.

I have chose to analyse this video because is an unusual style as it is all shot in one location. This style of video could be replicated on a minimum budget as there is no special effects/ CGI.

The artists in the video are wearing the style of clothing that you would associate with a typical hip hop/ rap artist. There is a lot of expensive equipment in this video, this is because it allows the artists to seem wealthy and powerfull as they like to "flash their cash".

The song that I am using is heart skips a beat by Olly Murs. This means that from this point onwards, i can start tailoring my research and developmant towards this genre and style.

My Music Video

As I am unsure about the song that I will be using, my main priority for this week is to decide on the song so that I can begin planning out the story line for my video.

Trends in Music videos

In the music videos that I have looked at, I have noticed several trends in the way that they have been pruduced etc. With the more popular artists, there tends to be a larger budjet meaning that they can spend more money on cgi and they have more flexibility as to where they want to shoot.

This raises the issue that I have a small/minimal budget, so with the video that I produce, I must ensure that I take these factors into consideration.

I have also noticed that in the majority of these videos the main focus is on the artist and they are made out to be powerfull and dominent.

In my music video I will try my best to follow this trend and keep the main focus on the lead singer.

This music video is based around the band 'Black Eyed Peas' leading a perfect lifestle, recording music, performing at clubs and traveling the world. This is effective because it makes the viewers envy the band and view them as role models.

This is also done on a very large budget as the venues and the locations would have been hired out spacificaly for the purposes of this video. There are also many people in the video as extras which may or may not have been payed.

I think that this video is good because it uses the name of the song and the lyrics to influence the style and the location of the music video. The video is also well timed and edited with the music so that the cuts are on the beats.

I like the location and the overall vibe of this music video and I am considering using a similar style. This music video is shot in what seems to be an abandoned warehouse. This could easily be replicated by using a large bus or train station.

This is also a good idea as it does not matter too much about the weather conditions as it will hopefully be under cover.

The costumes in this video are very casual and you can see that there was no strict guidelines when it came to what they should wear, however they are all wearing the same style of chothing i.e leather jacket, and the girls are all wearing very revealing clothing and as a result of that the male audience will want to watch the video as they find the girls attractive, and the female audience will look up to the dancers as a role model/style icon.

Genre?

There are many different genres of music out there, pop, rock, indie, hip-hop, r&b, dance, trance, electro, ballad, Oprah and lots more. This is why it is important to make the right decision. as far as research is concerned, there are far more pop music videos out there, as this is the most current and "popular" genre. There will therefore easier to research this style.

Music Video or Film Trailer

I had to make a decision whether to create a music video or a film trailer. After taking into consideration the conventions of each one, I decided to create a music video. Now I have decided on this, I will need to choose the genre of music I wish to use in my project. It is important that I pick a song that I will not get bored of and that I can listen to a lot, as this will be necessary throughout the production process.
